Terms of Service

Terms of Service is a 2014 graphic novella about data privacy published by Al Jazeera America. The story was reported, written, and drawn by Michael Keller and nonfiction graphic novelist, Josh Neufeld.

I served as editor and project manager.

Terms of Service was the most popular and widely-read story we produced at Al Jazeera America. Michael and Josh were interviewed on television, radio, and for articles by media outlets in the U.S. and all over the world.

The project was published online and in print. We built Pulp, a custom digital reader hosted on our projects server, to view the story online. We made the tool available to the open source community and were awards “Best Use of Open Source” by GitHub. Several other news organizations, including the BBC, forked Pulp and used it for their own stories.

Sadly, the project server is now defunct, so it’s no longer possible to read Terms of Service online.

However, the digital version was selected for preservation in the prestigious Webcomics Collection at the Library of Congress.

Terms of Service is also available for purchase in print in English, French and German.
